Soon, one can study Accounting and Painting
Many a students have wondered why he or she could not pursue Math and Arts in one course. Their plea will soon be a reality when the new education policy comes into force. Announced on Wednesday, the new policy on education has several initiatives but the one that is interesting is the option to choose subjects of your choice.
Graduation courses in the future would have a major and minor which means a student can have Accounting as a major and Painting as a minor. Why, even dance as a minor.
The syllabus too would be reduced drastically with focus on the core. The policy makers laid a lot of emphasis on practical and application. When the content is reduced, it paves the way for critical thinking. Discovery, analysis, ideation among students, inquiry and finding would be the basis of learning. In short, mugging up information would be the thing of the past and for teachers, ‘chalk and talk’ too would take a back seat.
The greater flexibility to choose subjects allows students to follow their passion. For instance, if a student is keen on modern art he could as well opt for Business Studies and Modern Art as subjects. Also, there would be no rigid separation between Art and Science.
Vocational courses would be introduced in schools and by the time a student comes to graduation, he or she would have imbibed an interest and take it forward. Old timers say that in the 50s students were taught making shoes with leather in the Hyderabad Public School in Hyderabad.
