We have been hearing the statement: ‘Electric vehicles are the future’ for a long time. This time around, we can confidently state they are here to stay as a number of EV bikes and cars have entered the market. In the past, there were hardly any vehicles to name but today there are Tesla, Hyundai, Mahindra, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Chevrolet, BMW to name a few.
The automobile industry has come a long way since Anyos Jedlik invented an electric motor in 1828. Electric vehicles have been improving ever since and in India, cars and buses too were developed. Rewa has been a huge hit not only in India but is popular in London. In 2000, BHEL developed an eighteen-seater electric bus, which became popular too. Then approx. 200 electric vans were made and ran in Delhi.
The Government of India (GoI) is keen on pushing for electric vehicles resulting in subsidy to 11 cities to launch electric buses, taxis, and e-rickshaws under the scheme Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles (FAME).
Currently, electric vehicles contribute to only 0.29% of the overall registrations in India. This percentage is likely to go up as people are warming up to the idea of electric vehicles.
